Martin Rondeau, Mixed Media Artist. Montreal.
Martin Rondeau is a conceptual artist who disrupts photography by breaking away from the traditional, two-dimensional plane, using a process of severing, weaving and shaping to transform his initial images into a new artistic medium, one that ultimately renders a different meaning; a distorted, sculptural, painterly form that confuses the eye and creates a visual ambiguity, a lack of reference and an inability to situate oneself.
Rondeau’s primary goal is to distort the photographic impression by making something new out of a medium he has used for the past thirty years. With a background in the fashion photography industry, he desires to create a new artistic medium by cutting into another to make his color palette, not unlike that of a painter. Through techniques of slicing, tearing, scratching, slatting and weaving, a transformation of the material occurs as thick, braided and embossed sculptural forms take shape. This surgical reconstruction of different physiognomies converge themes of curved bodies and finely formed faces to realize a new vision for beauty, while the collage like manipulation of the physical materials metamorphosize Trompe-l’oeil illusions to craft new readings, pushing the boundaries of what photography can be.
